In August of 2020, the mother of a then 7-year-old girl Polina reached out to us for help. Polina's father has a disability and the family was unable to cover Polina's medical expenses. Polina has a rare leg condition, with constant inflammation of the bone in her foot, that caused her leg to stop growing at some point in her early childhood. When they approached us, her right leg was 4 inches shorter than her left one and the persistent bone inflammation was posing a life-threatening risk. Most doctors recommended amputation. We helped them find the best specialists in a different city and covered Polina's urgent hospitalization. With the help of brilliant doctors led by Dr. Dmitro Yershov, the infection was successfully halted. This was followed by a long, painful but necessary journey of leg lengthening, which was mostly outpatient but still included a few hospitalizations. This whole time since 2020, we've been covering all of Polina's monthly medical expenses. In addition to treating the leg, scoliosis correction was added. Now, 4 years later, Polina's affected leg is almost the same length as her healthy one. We're thrilled that we are making such an impact on this child's life, not only preventing the amputation of her leg but also enabling her to walk through life with both legs nearly equal in length. Polina is still growing, and the doctors' work on lengthening her leg will need to continue until she stops growing. We greatly rely on your involvement and support to see this girl's treatment through to the end.
